How To Kill A Team

A Team can do great things, but a team is like an organism if it’s not healthy it will die.
Zurich 2011 - Team
There are 4 viruses that can kill any team.

Lack of Vision

Poor communication means poor vision casting. If somebody doesn’t know what someone is doing and why they are doing it, they are misinterpreted and seen as competition. This creates unhealthy conflicts. You have to tell the story and the vision so much, people start to make fun of you. It’s a repetition process.

Gossip

Gossip will destroy any team. By definition, gossip is when something negative is discussed with anyone who can’t solve the problem. A leader should develop and maintain a culture in which negatives are handed up and positives are handed down. A team can do anything if they are one mind, but  gossip will destroy it. Don’t go complain to your team members about your leader.

Unresolved disagreements

This happens when a leader doesn’t know a disagreement exists or avoids confrontation. If you know there is a disagreement and you don’t deal with it, it just brews and forms into a full-blown warfare. People are allowed to not like each other, but they are not allowed to question the integrity of a person. Always protect identity and discuss actions.

Sanctioned incompetence

If there are two people who do the same thing and one of them doesn’t work or is just incompetent while the other is always on time and working hard, the incompetence of the one will demoralize the hard worker and the whole team.

A leader must go to battle early and often with any of these 4 viruses that  will destroy the team.Building unity within a team can be difficult. But if your team sticks together, they will survive and achieve results that will blow you away.

Interesting post, I always enjoy reading your blogs. I do agree that a team is like an organism, it’s co-dependent on each member. Reminds me of the Aristotle quote: “The whole is greater than the sum of it’s parts.” Well done!

Kei, that’s a good questions. I always say that if you want to make your leader better give answers and solutions instead of complains. But I do understand that there are moments when it’s necessary to poor out your heart.

“Don’t go complain to your team members about your leader” —— so…. what’s the better way for team member and leader when there’s a complain about the leader ?

    Thanks, Tom and Guy.
It’s easy to write about leadership, but it’s reality that makes you sweat. Keep up the good work and remember: NEVER GIVE UP!

Great points ND. I especially like the idea of working on unresolved disagreements. Oftentimes, we try to pretend that everything is fine in our teams while the elephant in the room continues to trouble everyone. We can get so much more work done when we first lay the groundwork for people being able to work together well.
