Courage: That quality of mind which enables one to encounter danger and difficulties with firmness, or without fear, or fainting of heart; valor; boldness; resolution.

Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear, not absence of fear. Mark Twain

I have watched people dismiss their fear and step up with courage. For me this has always been an inspirational statement of what life could look like.

What lessons have I learned from this.

Expand your boundaries

Do not fear mistakes. You will know failure. Continue to reach out. Benjamin Franklin

I’m standing next to the one meter jumping board by the pool and encourage my daughter to jump in.
“I can’t jump, I’m afraid!” she said.  I answered: “this is the moment you can live out courage”. She looked at me with puzzled eyes. “What?”

Only when you are afraid and still do it, that is the moment when courage comes alive.
Your fears will tell you, when the chance has come to live out courage.

Embrace failure

In order to succeed, your desire for success should be greater than your fear of failure. Bill Cosby

There will never be security on the road of courage. It is a high-risk road that will take you toward adventure.

As my daughter came out of the water her face told the story. She was in pain. I expected nothing else. As she jumped of the board her body fell horizontally into the water. This hurts! I knew this was a crucial moment for her. Will she go again or stop? To my surprise she looked at me and said: “Ouch! Let me go again”

There is no way to stay away from failure when you risk something. You can only make a decision on how you will handle them when they happen.

Growing through failure

We must build dikes of courage to hold back the flood of fear. Martin Luther King, Jr.

As my daughter walked to the jumping board the second time she said: “Now I know how not to jump.”

This reminded me of Sir Edmund Hillary. He tried to climb the Mount Everest several times but failed. After another failure to climb it he stood at the foot of the mountain with his fist in the air saying: “I will conquer you! You cannot get any bigger – but I will grow!”

Faith activates God – Fear activates the Enemy. Joel Osteen

Fear has the ability to keep us save and open the door to experience courage.

Fear has its use but cowardice has none. Mohandas Gandhi

One man with courage is a majority. Thomas Jefferson

  1. Hey ND,

    Interesting blog!

I have only one fear, that is failing. Failing my family. Its an odd fear as it dont see failing my family as an option – theres no way i would let that happen, they are too important.

I guess in a sense i live out courage every day with the attitude that i wont let them down. Soemtimes it takes a lot, especially when your in a job you dont like and struggle financially and with cirumstances.

When i think of being courageous i think of dying under persicution – that is courage. Not letting go of what you belive when your threatened with death.

  2. Ohh man i like this one.

This make me wanna go sky-diving. (i don´t like hight) It´s good to be reminded those things. Jesus says: become like a child. I think we can develop this 2 sentence into many parts of life, one of them is in the way of doing things. The same way that I see my niece´s improve everyday, not afraid, of climbing the table and fall. But we sometimes, in our life we stops climbing. Because we remember the hurt of falling better then the feeling of victory.

Looking forward to you next blog, and the next item to think over.
